What is Abnormal Psychology ?
It is a branch of psychology that deals with the
abnormal behavior and psychopathology. In abnormal psychology we
usually study patterns of behavior, thoughts, and emotions. The term covers a
broad range of disorders, from depression to obsessive-compulsive disorders
[OCD] to personality disorders. The term "abnormal" indicates that
something away from the norm. Many behaviors could be considered as abnormal,
this branch of psychology typically deals with behavior in a clinical context.
The science of abnormal psychology studies two types of behaviors : adaptive
and maladaptive behavior. Adaptive behavior are ones that are well-suited in
their surroundings and lifestyles, and the people communicating and
understanding each other. Maladaptive behavior indicates that some problems
exist, and individual is not able to cope with environmental stress which is
leading them to have problems functioning in daily life in their emotions,
physical actions, talks and mental thinking.
